The ‘Executive’ Service: Why Your Lexus Needs More Than Just an Oil Change at 100k

In the Nairobi car world, hitting 100,000km is a psychological milestone. For many owners, it’s the point where they decide to either sell the car or “keep it forever.”

If you choose to keep it, you cannot treat the 100k service like a 10k oil change. Most general garages in Nairobi will swap your oil, kick the tires, and send you on your way. But a Lexus is a precision machine. At 100,000km, the “hidden” fluids and components that have been working silently in the background begin to reach their chemical limit.

Here is why the “Executive Service” is the only way to ensure your Lexus reaches 300,000km without a major failure.

1. The Spark Plug “Misfire” Trap

Lexus uses high-performance Iridium-tipped spark plugs. They are designed to last, but in our Kenyan climate—with varying fuel quality and heat—they are usually “spent” by 100k.

  • The Symptom: You might notice a slightly rough idle at a red light in Kilimani or a tiny “stutter” when you accelerate onto the highway.

  • The Risk: Worn plugs force your ignition coils to work harder. In a Lexus, replacing 6 ignition coils (standard on an RX350) is significantly more expensive than just replacing the plugs on time.

  • Sarah’s Rule: Always use Lexus Genuine Iridium. Counterfeit plugs are common in Nairobi and can actually melt, dropping ceramic into your engine.

2. The “Lifetime” Transmission Fluid Myth

If you look at your Lexus manual, it might say the transmission fluid is “Lifetime.”

Sarah’s Reality Check: “Lifetime” in Japan or Europe is very different from “Lifetime” in Nairobi. Constant stop-and-go traffic on Mombasa Road generates massive heat, which shears down the protective additives in the Toyota WS fluid.

  • Flush vs. Drain: We don’t just “drain” the pan. We perform a Fluid Exchange. This removes the burnt fluid trapped in the torque converter—fluid that a standard “drain and fill” misses. This is the difference between a gearbox that “shudders” at 150k and one that shifts like silk.

3. Differential & Transfer Case Oil

This is the most neglected part of a Lexus service in Kenya. Your RX or LX has gearboxes (differentials) that send power to the wheels.

  • The Problem: Metal-on-metal wear creates microscopic shavings. If you don’t drain the differential oil at 100k, those shavings turn the oil into sandpaper.

  • The Sign: A faint “whining” sound at highway speeds is often the first sign of a dying differential. By then, it’s too late. Replacing the oil is a KES 15,000 job; replacing a diff is a KES 200,000 nightmare.

4. The “Inverter Coolant” (For Hybrids Only)

If you drive an RX450h or NX300h, you have two separate cooling systems. One for the engine, and one for the Hybrid Inverter.

  • The 100k Milestone: The inverter is the “brain” of your hybrid system. If its coolant becomes acidic or low, it can overheat and fail. A new inverter can cost as much as a small car. We flush this system specifically with Toyota Super Long Life Coolant (SLLC) to protect those expensive electronics.

Sarah’s Final Advice: Don’t Step Over a Shilling to Save a Cent

A 100k “Executive Service” is more expensive than a standard oil change, yes. But it is a one-time investment that resets the clock on your car’s most expensive components.
